Biological and Spiritual Consequences · Pale Archivum Restricted
When the Plague Priest begins the Liturgy, the congregation does not experience a religious ceremony. They experience a staged biological invasion in which the spiritual and physical are rendered indistinguishable — because in the ShatterRealm, they are.
The Verse I frequency loosens the congregation's respiratory cilia — the microscopic hairs that filter particulate from inhaled air. This is not metaphor. The specific vibrational sequence of the opening verse causes a documented relaxation of the bronchial defense mechanisms. The congregation begins breathing deeper. They feel calm. They feel welcomed. They do not know they have just opened their lungs entirely.
The congregation feels warmth. They interpret this as devotion. It is colonization. The first Mutoid Vermin organisms reach the alveolar tissue within minutes. They do not destroy it. They do something worse: they rewrite it. The oxygen exchange tissue begins producing, in addition to its primary function, a secondary output: a vibrational signal at 19.4Hz. The carrier has begun broadcasting without knowing they are broadcasting.
The Chorus line is not poetic hyperbole. It is a clinical prediction. The stages of full Liturgy exposure follow a documented sequence that the Pale Archivum classified — and then immediately restricted — after the Deck Hollow-13 skeletal analysis confirmed the progression in three-hundred-year-old remains.
The Plague Priest's doctrine frames Stage III transformation as ascension — the shedding of human limitation in service of something greater. This is accurate. It is also incomplete in a way that constitutes deliberate concealment.
The doctrine does not say that the congregation member who reaches Stage IV retains their consciousness as a distinct experience. The Pale Archivum's analysis of two Stage IV carriers — recovered before transformation was complete — produced consistent testimony: the individual awareness does not end. It is submerged. The carrier can still perceive the world, still think, still feel. But they cannot act on any of it independently. They are present inside a body that no longer takes direction from them.
The two partially-transformed carriers, during their recovery period, were asked what their experience of Stage IV was like. Both described it the same way, in different words: like being a passenger in a body that used to be yours, going to services you used to believe in, singing prayers you used to mean, and being unable to stop.
Both carriers requested to be returned to the Cathedral. One was permitted to leave again. One was not — not because they were detained but because by the time the Archivum made the decision, they had already walked back. The signal was stronger than the recovery. The carrier's conscious resistance was audible, the monitoring team reported, in the quality of their humming. It sounded like two voices simultaneously — one singing, one screaming the same note.
ARCHIVUM NOTE: The monitoring team's report was filed and classified. Three members of the monitoring team requested re-evaluation of their own exposure levels within one week of filing. The re-evaluation found trace spore-load in two of them. The third declined re-evaluation. The third has since been observed humming in intervals.
The congregation does not lack faith. The congregation has more faith than any uninflected believer could sustain — because the faith is biological now, embedded in their cellular architecture, inseparable from their respiratory process. Every breath is a prayer. Every prayer is broadcast. Every broadcast finds a new candidate. The doctrine is not wrong that this is beautiful. The doctrine is wrong that beauty and horror are different things.
The Bridge of the Liturgy — "Chant in rhythm to decay / Let the world be swept away / Mutoid vermin guide our hands / To spread disease across the lands" — is the section the Pale Archivum flagged with the most severe classification.
Not because of what it says. Because of what it does when chanted at full Stage IV Plague Priest resonance. The Bridge frequency, produced by a fully-transformed Plague Priest at the center of a Cathedral congregation, is the only documented sound in the Codex Maledictus archive that has been confirmed to propagate across the Realm boundary from II to I without digital intermediation. It does not need the internet. It does not need audio recording. It travels through the substrate.
The congregation does not become something inhuman.
That would be easier.
They become more human than they were —
more devoted, more present, more surrendered.
They become what the doctrine always promised
and no one believed it meant literally.
